MOUNT BROMO, A SPECTACULAR INDONESIA VOLCANO

This spectacular landscape is located around 4 hours drive from Surabaya, the capital city of East Java This Caldera is a part of the Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park that covers a massive area of 800 square km. A well-known name Mount Bromo (2,392masl ) is actually an active volcano in the Bromo-Tengger-Semeru National Park of East Java, Indonesia. On the photo above, Bromo is the volcano which constantly produces  white sulphurous smoke. It stand in front of the highest volcano in Java, Mount Semeru at 3,676 m ASL. Bromo is in fact only one of many peaks inside the massive easily recognized as the entire top has been blown off hundred thousands years ago. 

Bromo maybe is just a small volcano, but the unique mountains inside the caldera of Tengger and Mt Bromo itself will not disappoint you with its spectacular views and dramatic landscapes. At 2,392 meters tall, Mt Bromo is not among the tallest of Indonesia’s mountains but its stunning beauty lies in its incredible setting.

The volcano in front (see the photo) is Mount Batok (2440m). It is a brown volcanic cone at the north center of the caldera. Unlike the other nearby peaks it is no longer active and actually has some vegetation growing on it, mostly the pine tree that somehow manages to survive after Bromo eruption on 2011. 

From a famous view point on Penanjakan (2,770 m ASL), the travelers will see a beautiful sunrise combined with the dramatic landscape of Tengger Caldera. Penanjakan Viewpoint, located just north of the caldera, is a mountain top viewpoint accessible by paved road from Tosari and hence popular with jeeps and even tour buses. Most of the crowd comes to see the sunrise start from the hotel at 3.00 am.  From this view point spot the scenery is magnificent. All you will hear is the click of cameras as visitors capture the incredible scenery of Tengger Caldera. Almots every 1 hours, Semeru Volcano will erupt in the distance and the sun will gradually color the sky and landscape of the caldera. The inside the flat-lookingcaldera, is the Sea of Sand. It is filled with fine volcanic sand and the overall effect is just a stunning dessert view, especially as it is compared to the lush green valleys all around the caldera.

The fairy landscape has produced countless legends and myths. Bromo Volcano has a significance role for the Tengger people who believe that this was the site where a chiled sacrificed his life for his family. The Tenggerist gather once a year during the annual Kasada festival where offerings of vegetables, chickens and money are thrown into the crater of the volcano.

Bromo Volcano, located in the Tengger caldera in East Java, began to rumble and erupt in early December. Until today the plumes of ash rising up to more than three kilometers. The ashes fly away to more than 65 kilometers, mostly to the north west side. Airports nearby Bromo are likely to be affected by the eruptions especially Malang airport, but the Surabaya’s Juanda Airport is still safe from the ash fall. The Indonesian Centre for Volcanology and Disaster Hazard Mitigation stated high alert status for Bromo Volcano. It is forbidden for the visitors to come close to the danger zone 3 kilometers around the volcano. 

Volcano eruption looks scary and danger. But for the local people, known as Tengger Tribe, who live around the surrounding massif Tengger Caldera, will not go for evacuation until their religious Hindu leader the "Manku" says must leave. According to him Bromo God will do the activity for around six months, and then there will be big eruptions, but now it is still okay to stay. 

Most of the volcanic materials from Bromo eruptions are actually falls down inside the caldera. The ashes then forms a unique desert like around the caldera.
